Q&A: Omar Wasow

The guest on C-SPAN's Q&A is technology analyst Omar Wasow, co-founder of BlackPlanet.com

Omar is an internet analyst who appears frequently on radio and television. Wasow tutored Oprah Winfrey in her first exploration of the Net in the 12-part series Oprah Goes Online.[1] He is co-founder and strategic advisor for the social networking website BlackPlanet.com.

In 1995, Wasow was proclaimed by Newsweek as one of the "fifty most influential people to watch in cyberspace." Around 1999 or 2000, Wasow introduced Oprah Winfrey to electronic mail in a series of 12 appearances on her television show. In 2003, Wasow appeared in an Apple, Inc advertisement discussing their latest operating system at the time Mac OS X Panther.

Wasow is currently working on his doctorate at Harvard University in African-American Studies and political science. In a 2009 interview with Brian Lamb, Wasow stated that he had started at Harvard in 2005.

Wasow is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City, where he was President of the Student Union. He then graduated from Stanford University in California with a BA degree in Race and Ethnic Relations

Spike Lee Interview for 'If God is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise'

Spike Lee returns to New Orleans Five years after Katrina for IF GOD IS WILLING AND DA CREEK DON'T RISE, a four hour, two part documentary debuting August 23rd and 24th, exclusively on HBO.

PART ONE OF "IF GOD IS WILLING AND DA CREEK DON'T RISE DEBUTS AUGUST 23RD AND PART TWO ON AUGUST 24TH ON HBO.

A little known secret, Spike was the spark that got BlackTree going in early 1996. While I was in college, Spike came to town to shoot his docudrama Get on the Bus in the dead of winter, I believe it was like February in Tennessee. Spike and the Jackie Robinson Foundation went to all of the local universities, Tennessee State, Vanderbilt, Fisk and David Lipscomb to recruit students to help P.A. on the project which was underfunded as Spike received little help from the studios but went out to actors like Danny Glover, Denzel, and friends like Jordan and Oprah to raise capital to make the film. The perfect dream for a P.A, an underfunded film with major talent, because as a P.A that means that you are going to get major experience. While normally, a PA (Production Assistant) spends his time getting coffee or grabbing waters, we were thrust into the production helping with everything from building dolly tracks to working with the extras to even standing in on some scenes. I even had 1 second of fame as I had a non speaking role that required me to give my best Oscar performance walking from a pick up truck into a convenience store, it was the best 1 second performance of my life! The cast of the film was filled with great actors from the now deceased Ossie Davis and Bernie Mac to then newcomer Hill Harper and other actors like Isaiah Washington, Andre Brauer, Roger Guenveur Smith, Harry Lennix and Wendell Pierce who would later become familiar faces on the big screen. Let me not forget Charles 'Rock' Dutton, who til this day I credit with inspiring me to be better. I mean, this was the experience of my life, especially since until that day I had never considered the possibility of being on a film set, I was finishing up my sophomore year and was well on my way to being what I considered to be my destiny, a medical doctor. Not just any medical doctor, but a specialized neurologist creating medical miracles with my hands and my grasp of science. So this was all new to me. I remember the first day that Spike actually took some time to really speak to us on individual levels, something I didn't even think would occur on a film set. I was a stranger to film sets, but I knew that the PA is not wasting the directors time with conversation, so I was shocked when Spike approached me and asked me about my afro, I was amazed. So I asked him about a shot he did in one of my favorite movies, Malcolm X, and he explained it to me, and from that minute I knew that I had found a new love. I had instantly fell in love with film the way that people fall in love with their perfect match. The crazy thing is that it had found me, I wasn't seeking to find a new career goal, or to dream a new dream. I was perfectly satisfied with which way I was going in life. But at that very moment, I knew I wanted to sit in one of those directors chairs. BlackTree had not yet formed into my mind, but not more than 5 months after shooting this film, I started BlackTree. I started it with a dream to be able to one day tell the world something, and I have. A couple of things came together at that time to make it all possible, one the 1996 Olympics were being held in my hometown, two I got my first camera a Hi 8, and three the internet was sprouting out of it's infancy into childhood and starting to show it's personality, and I got it. and that was the start of BlackTree and the end of my medical career, at least for the time being. 14 years later BlackTree Media is one of the most watched content providers on the web, our content can be indexed on over 64,000 websites and over 350 Million views on YouTube alone. So this interview was truly an honor, it is like seeing things come full circle. Now my ultimate dream will be to do a film with Spike, who knows.....maybe..... Thank you Spike for taking the time. Thank you for opening my mind to new dreams and aspirations, you've helped to change my life.

How Wall Street looked to a high school student in the 1980s

There are many visions of Wall Street. Over the years and much has changed. Let me take you down memory lane just a little bit. For some this tour may be unclear, for some it may be a little clear and for others it may be crystal clear. Back in the 1980’s I started my journey on Wall Street.

I was a senior in high school at Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, N.Y., and had joined a Co-Operative education program (Co-Op). I’m not sure how many of these exist today. I had the opportunity to work one full week with pay and then go to school the following week. A high school student stepping on to Wall Street for the first time was an experience like no other.

The first adjustment to the adult world was being told that I could address the adults by first name as opposed to “Mr” or “Mrs” or “Ms.” As I did with my High School teachers. I was very fortunate to work for a well-established firm called, The Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. As it is today, it was then that the firms wanted to ensure that students experiencing the firm for the first time got very familiar with the industry and the firm. Training back then, involved visiting a room where you were equipped with a cassette tape player, cassettes, booklets and headphones. I remember hearing words like “manifold” referring to trading tickets. You don’t here that too often now if at all. The training tapes gave information about the various departments and the company itself.

I did not feel completely out of place as I also found number of other High School Co-Op students working in my same section at the company. I handled the “manifold” tickets relative to trades that had been entered. I worked in the section called “Ticket Check Off”. The Department was called Government Bond. Here I saw trade tickets relative to what I would soon learn were Fixed Income trades such as Treasuries as well as Money Market Instruments such as Certificates of Deposit and Bankers Acceptances.

As I reflect back now what was most interesting was that that I not only got to “see” the manifold tickets relative to these instruments I also got to see the instruments themselves. This was the 1980’s and many of the instruments of the day were in physical form. I got to see US Treasury Notes with the interest payment “coupons attached”. We would attached a one copy of a multi-ply manifold ticket to the Treasury by using what then a “T-Pin” which I have not seen in ages. I was informed one day I would be delivering some Treasuries to the Federal Reserve Bank down the street (we were located on Broad Street across from the NY Stock Exchange). We had an armed Security Guard Accompany us. I later realized that as many of the instruments of the day were in “bearer” form they could literally be cashed by whoever said it was theirs.

Working in Government Bond was an excellent learning experience. I got involved with the daily proof and reconciliation. We reconciled with a group of individuals that were enclosed behind a window called “The Cage”. We ran a calculation tapes on huge calculators that took up most of a desk and used two copy calculator tape (on copy being a carbon copy). We would balance the general ledger tickets that had passed throughout the day.

There were no personal computers as we know them today. For me as a High Schooler, my taste of the Internet was during my "school week" I was able to go into a High School Room and dial-up an on line services. I would need to dial the number on the telephone and then put down the handset on some acoustic couplers (shaped like the phone mouth and ear piece) that was attached to a printing (not display) terminal. The Session information would print out on the long printer as opposed to on a display system. News and other other information would print out. That was it for the "The Net" in those days! As with most High School Students of the day, the highlight was lunch time. Most interesting enough lunch was free. Not only that, on those occasions when we had to work late we also got free dinner via a “supper pass”. For me the work, the experience and the food, was the life!

To make money online many people jump right in before they are properly prepared. You know that to be a rocket scientist, a doctor, a brick layer, a construction worker, an office worker, a teacher there are prerequisites, things you must learn, before you can be successful, you don't just jump right in unprepared.

The same applies to the Internet marketing industry even though there are unsavory people out there who'd have you believe it's a "Walk in the Park" and requires no more than the belief that you can just do it.

And I'll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you have to put up with in the working world punching a clock being a subordinate to someone who does not have your interests in mind, but there are still rules you have to follow and pitfalls you must avoid to actually make Internet marketing work for you.

Most people will not make a dime online and yet there are others who will make more in one month than most people make in a whole year. Why is that?

My answer begins with the age-old chicken or egg question, "what comes first the chicken or the egg"? Personally I vote for, well never mind, each argument you or I make comes back to the same old conclusion - I have no clue and I don't think many of us do either.

But one thing I do have a clue about and know for sure is that to make money online you must first have Passion for the company products and/or service of any Internet business from which you expect to make money.

Passion in this sense simply means that you've researched and like the company and products or services. It is then that you translate that like (or Passion) into the education, excitement and work that usually accompany Passion.

I will have to say that many online entrepreneurs are so good at what they do that they ignore passion because they can sell anything. But I'm concerned about those of you who are not so knowledgeable at working an online business successfully.

Now, I'm not trying to make anyone believe that Passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have a good website, good marketing, widespread advertising, company support, effective keywords, and etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join - but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Passion for the company and the products and services provided by that company, again, you won't attempt to do the work you are being taught.

Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming but it does take motivation caused by Passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won't stumble.

You have a great resource in the Internet search engines to search about the Internet Marketing industry for business opportunities, USE IT!

Your research should uncover a company that you like and have confidence in. It should be solid, founded on great principles, and easy to understand with great products and services that are sell-able for which you can have Passion. If you don't find it move on,
You can find the right opportunity containing the attributes identified above.

Comments like, well, that one sounds good and the compensation plan is excellent so I guess I'll start that business - does not sound like a decision based on anything near Passion. And remember when you hear that an Internet "guru" does that, don't be tempted, because as I said earlier they are experienced and can sell just about anything, without being Passionate about the company products and services.

Note: By the way it's your goal to get to the point where you can sell about anything online. That end skill and goal is a worthy one indeed.

Remember, there are other steps you must make before you step into Internet Marketing but if you don't first find the right company products and services to be passionate about, all of those other steps may just cause you a lot of frustration instead of bringing you great success.

Not being Passionate about a company and products and services that has market proof that it will sell is a pitfall you simply must avoid.
